As a base material, steel is stronger than polymer but is heavier in weight. Polymer is much lighter than steel and offers superior corrosion resistance. Steel offers much more flexibility in custom design features but polymer offers better longevity once installed. Some swimming pool builders require that polymer pool kits be backfilled with gravel only, and they feel it’s okay to backfill steel pool kits with just packed excavated dirt, but this is a bad idea. At Pool Warehouse we recommend backfilling all styles of swimming pool kits with only non-expansive materials, such as gravel, to prevent settling issues and to ensure strength.
