Mesh Vs Solid Safety Swimming Pool Covers

PoolKits | September 15, 2014

Every winter we get thousands of call from customers seeking advice on mesh vs solid safety swimming pool covers. Most pool owners are wanting to make an upgrade from their standard “tarp” style winter cover to a much stronger, more permanent “safety” style in-ground swimming pool cover. Tarp covers are very poor winter pool covers and much like a solid cover they require a pump to keep water from puddling on the top. Most tarp style pool covers will only last 1-2 years and have no safety value. The following is a list of pros and cons that will help determine the difference between mesh vs solid safety swimming pool covers.

Mesh Safety Pool Cover Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Mesh safety pool covers allow precipitation to pass through them into the pool while screening out leaves and other debris. This flow-through enables wet leaves and debris that collect on the cover to dry and blow away, concentrating your need to sweep off your cover to big snowstorms. Note, however, that excessive precipitation may periodically require use of a sump pump to drain excess water out of the pool.
  • Mesh safety pool covers typically cost less than a solid vinyl pool cover. In most cases, the price difference between the two is $200-$600.
  • Mesh safety pool covers typically last longer than vinyl covers, however both of the covers offered by Pool Warehouse come with a 15 year warranty.
  • Mesh safety  pool covers do not need a pump on top because they just let the pool water pass through. These pumps can be rather costly, often times around $200-$250 each.
  • Mesh safety pool covers are made from light-weight material and can be taken on and off by one person in most cases, unlike solid covers which generally require at least two persons to take on and off.

Cons

  • Fine sediment, water washed over dirty leaves, and some UV light gets into your pool.
  • UV light passing through the pool cover frequently stimulates algae and bacteria growth.
  • Spring cleanup is more time consuming because of the sediment that’s needed to be cleaned out and water treated to remove algae.

Solid Pool Cover Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Solid swimming pool covers do not allow sunlight to pass through. This is important because in the Spring when the pool water starts to warm up, algae will grow on the walls if it has contact (as it does with a mesh cover) to sunlight.
  • Solid swimming pool covers keep water out of the pool as well. For example, when leaves fall on your pool cover during the winter and it rains, the leaves will cause the rain water to become very dirty a solid cover it will keep that dirty water out, allowing the pool water to stay much cleaner.
  • Cleaner water usually leads to very little brushing, vacuuming, chemicals, etc in the Spring to get the pool swimmable, unlike a mesh covered pool which will likely need a few days of vacuuming , brushing, and filtering before it is ready for the new season.

Cons

  • Solid pool covers require maintenance throughout the winter. Snow, rain, and other debris must be swept or pumped off the solid safety cover.
  • Excessive weight will cause your solid pool cover to sag, impairing its function and reducing its useful life, so owners must be vigilant throughout the season.
  • Some solid pool covers have a small center drain that eases some of the maintenance burden. The solid cover will keep most of the precipitation and sediment out of the pool, but the small drain alleviates potentially harmful weight buildup, for example, in the event of a heavy rainstorm. The tradeoff is a slightly more labor intensive spring opening.
